Now, keeping your hair during chemo is your choice.

What is cryotherapy or scalp cooling?

Imagine being able to keep your hair while undergoing chemotherapy. Scalp cryotherapy, also known as scalp cooling, is a technique that uses cold to protect the hair during cancer treatment. At CrioBella, we have developed a special cold gel cap that is placed on the scalp before, during, and after chemotherapy. By cooling the scalp, blood flow to the hair follicles is reduced, limiting the amount of chemotherapy that reaches these cells responsible for hair growth. This process helps preserve the hair follicles, minimizing one of the most visible and emotionally challenging side effects of chemotherapy: hair loss.

What results can you achieve?

With the use of scalp cooling, you can preserve up to 70% of your hair, although results may vary depending on the type and dosage of chemotherapy. Most patients experience a significant reduction in hair loss, allowing them to maintain their appearance and strengthen their self-esteem during this process. By reducing hair loss, this technique helps people face their treatment with a greater sense of normalcy and control over their image.

The first documented trials on the use of cooling caps to prevent hair loss during chemotherapy date back to the 1970s. Researchers began exploring this technique to mitigate one of the most visible and emotionally impactful side effects of chemotherapy. Since then, technology and methods have advanced significantly, leading to more effective and comfortable developments for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

It all started with a simple question...

Sometimes, great stories begin without making a sound. A conversation, an idea, and suddenly we were creating something that today helps many people face chemotherapy without losing themselves. Want to know how this puzzle came together?

How does it work?

1. Reduction of Scalp Temperature
The cooling cap, maintained at -20°C, is used before, during, and after chemotherapy. To ensure constant protection, it is replaced every 30 minutes, keeping the scalp temperature low continuously.
2. Constriction of Blood Vessels
Scalp cooling causes vasoconstriction, which means the narrowing of blood vessels in the area. By reducing blood flow to the hair follicles, less chemotherapy reaches them, which decreases cellular damage and, therefore, hair loss. Limiting drug exposure better protects the follicle cells from toxic effects.
3. Decrease in Metabolic Activity
Cooling reduces cellular activity in the follicles, making them less active. By decreasing their metabolism, the cells absorb less chemotherapy and become less vulnerable to its harmful effects, which helps preserve hair.
4. Direct Physical Protection
Cooling also reduces the absorption of drugs in follicle cells by decreasing their permeability. This provides additional protection against the toxic effects of chemotherapy, helping to minimize hair loss during treatment.

By cooling the scalp, we ensure that the hair follicle absorbs fewer drugs during chemotherapy. This method helps prevent hair loss, which is one of the most concerning side effects for patients undergoing cancer treatment.

The reduction in drug absorption by the hair follicle helps maintain the integrity of the hair, improving the quality of life and emotional well-being of patients.
